Bandhej Saree

You would have surely heard of Bandhani sarees. Bandhani, also called Bandhej is a unique tie and dye technique. It is famous for its origin from the areas of Rajasthan  and Gujarat. Each bandhani piece is hand crafted by artisans, and while it may embody contemporary style and designs, it stays strong to its roots.

The unique technique of Bandhani tie and dye is a highly skilled process and Bandhani sarees, bandhani dupattas or any other type of bandhani cloth is always prepared by hand. These handcrafted pieces are mostly made in Gajji silk, Georgette, Crepe and Silks. The special  technique of Bandhani has been handed down through generations as an artform.

How is Bandhani or Bandhej made

For the Bandhani or bandhej technique, a fabric is dyed after  it is tied tightly with thread at several points to create a variety of patterns. Unique combinations of thread tying creates clusters of patterns and striking color combinations are used to create each intricate piece of bandhani or jamnagari bandhej fabric. The skilled artisans use fingernails or nails made of iron for the unusually large number of times a piece of cloth has to be tied with thread. Elaborate arrangements of geometric patterns, leaves, flowers, humans and trees are created by repeating the tying and dying process. The cloth pieces are then made into sarees, suits, dupattas, kurtis or even turbans.  With added mirror or gotta work the fabrics look even more beautiful and create a lovely look when used to dress in.

Derived from a traditional word - Bandhan, which means tying or to tie - the technique has a historic past, yet Bandhani is fashionable as it is versatile. Planning to buy a bandhani saree?
